We invited some successful local trainers/business hours to talk about their approach to training and how they built their business model.
Joseph and Nolan Grinstain are two of the three brothers atop Hyperthrive Athletics. Hyperthrive has two locations in the greater Sacramento area. One is dedicated exclusively to athletes (particularly rotational athletes –baseball/softball). At the other, near the campus of Sacramento State University, they serve both athletes and “gen pop” or general fitness clients.
Joe Grinstain was a multi-sport athlete in high school and holds a Kinesiology - Movement Studies degree and is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
After high school, Joe attended CSU Chico where he graduated with a degree in Kinesiology - Movement Studies. During his time in Chico, Joe took over the role of Head Strength and Conditioning coach at Mavericks Athletic Development in Chico, CA, and helped run the CSU Chico softball team’s strength program his senior year. He also held strength and conditioning internship positions at the University of Alabama (baseball), University of California Berkeley (football), Capital Strength and Performance in Sacramento, and Cressey Sports Performance in Boston. He is Director of Strength and Performance for Hyperthrive
Nolan Grinstain is the Director of Speed Performance at Hyperthrive. He holds a Bachelors's Degree in Exercise Physiology and is both a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA, and a Master Sports Performance Coach through the National Sports Performance Association.
Together, we talked through a number of questions/topics:
• What are the differences in programing, goals, and motivation for athletes versus general fitness clients?
• What’s a strength and conditioning coach’s role when working with professional athletes?
• What’s it like to sleep in tents in Kenya with 30 family members?
• We also got their take on last episode’s question about kids and training for sports.
