We’re not strongman competitors or boxers for that matter, but we do pay attention to what moves the needle on awareness of strength sports in the general population. On March 19, 2022, Hafþór Björnsson, the 2018 World’s Strongest Man met Eddie Hall, the 2012 World’s Strongest Man in a boxing exhibition streamed for free around the world. (Spoiler: Hafþór won by unanimous decision.)
Both men state that they have retired from WSM competition, but do their actions still have an effect on the popularity of the sport? What did they gain personally if the purse for the event was donated to charity? Will the public think of strongman competitors as capable of performing in multiple sports? Due to injuries and the pandemic, this fight has been postponed for about a year and a half. Did the delay have an impact on the hype?
